The work of two Former Pupils features within the photography exhibition, ‘Higher Vision’, currently on display in the Scottish Parliament’s Main Hall until Friday 8 February 2019.
This free-to-enter exhibition, located within The Scottish Parliament, is in partnership with the SQA and the Scottish Society for the History of Photography. The display exhibits some of the best work from the 2300 Higher Photography pupils from the last academic year, including recent Former Pupils Carenza Dickens and Megan Leask.
Carenza’s portfolio of work is named ‘Beauty Pressure’ and explores artificial beauty within the media. Carenza explains her work: “By using studio setups and carefully manipulated colour, lighting and props I was able to mimic the airbrushed, ‘perfect’ images that we are exposed to in the media.” Megan’s project is named ‘Lonely Figures’. “I wanted to portray not only loneliness and isolation, but also its existence in company… it’s very easy to feel lonely when not alone. Hopefully (this will) raise awareness to be kind and inclusive to everyone.”
The projects selected for the exhibition were chosen by a panel consisting of photography and industry experts. The images within the display explore issues of identity, adolescence and mental health. The Presiding Officer, Ken Macintosh MSP said: “The themes covered a range from the intimate to the abstract, with intensely personal photographs alongside reflections on the natural environment. I would encourage anyone with an interest to come and see this thought-provoking collection.”
