Each year, The Historical Association partners with the Spirit of Normandy Trust to run the Young Historian of the Year Awards. The competition promotes an educational interest in all aspects of World War II and pupils from across the UK are invited to submit a project that explores any aspect of this topic that they find interesting.
Entries that are submitted by pupils attending secondary school are judged by a team of independent educators and experts.
For her essay on the impact of the war on Orkney, Arwen won the overall prize, and the title of “Young Historian of the Year” within the Key Stage 3 category. Arwen won £100, an impressive trophy for herself and £150 for Dollar Academy. This year, the size of entry for this category was five times larger than in previous years and Arwen’s project clearly stood out, as she was unanimously chosen by the judging panel as the overall winner.
Lauren also did extremely well, winning the “Best Local History” prize for her research project which explored The Clydebank Blitz. She won a £100 book token.
Both girls were awarded their prizes by Rector Ian Munro during assembly this morning.
