Team-Building and Fundraising for Romania Community Project

This summer a team of 14 pupils will be taking part in the Romania Community Project. They will be travelling to Little John’s House in northern Romania where they will visit and volunteer their help at an arts-based summer school. The house has six permanent residents and exists for the benefit of local and surrounding hospitals and orphanages. From previous years’ experience, this Dollar trip always results in a very powerful and meaningful experience for those pupils who participate. They are certainly looking forward to it very much indeed.

The pupils involved are now undertaking a range of activities in the lead-up to their journey, with the intention of raising further funds for Little John’s House, and also simply to get to know one another better before going to Romania.

With that in mind, on Saturday 9 June, 14 pupils from Dollar Academy embarked on an exciting team-building day of white-water rafting at Splash Aberfeldy. After kitting up, the team were very excited to partake in exercises and games all along the Tay River with their teachers Mrs Caine and Miss McGookin (Physics and Business Studies teachers, respectively, and the trip organisers).

‘It was a fun day to be had by all and not even the downpour of rain could dampen spirits. And, of course, just as much time was spent in the river as in the rafts!’ By the end of the day, all team members had certainly gotten to know one another better and could not contain their excitement for the trip ahead.

Time in the River Tay!

The next event was a Quiz Night and Raffle, held at Dollar Academy. The same team of 14 pupils organised and hosted the night, on Tuesday 12 June, and it was a very successful and lively affair. Over 80 guests, made up of family and friends, took part in the entirely pupil-run quiz to raise further funds for Little John’s House in northern Romania.

‘The team worked tirelessly to ensure their guests had the highest standard of hospitality and entertainment,’ said Ms McGookin. ‘Through the kind and generous support of those who attended, over £1000 were raised to donate to Little John’s House. A huge thank you is extended to family, friends and local businesses who supported our cause with kind donations. The raffle prizes were very well received, and everyone enjoyed an all-round entertaining evening.’

We look forward to hearing all about the trip upon their return to Dollar.
