On 16 and 17 January, Junior 2 visited the Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre in Stirling.
The day started with a short film, which explained the historic occurrences that brought King of Scots, Robert the Bruce, into battle against the army of King Edward II of England in 1314.
The children participated in a 3D digital experience and were split into two groups representing the Scottish and English armies and took part in their own interactive battle on a virtual battlefield. This gave a very realistic impression of how a battle might have unfolded during that time and brought to life this famous moment in Scottish history.
The pupils then visited the Bruce Monument and created a schiltron – the Scottish pike formation used to hold back cavalry charges during the Scottish Wars of Independence.
The children took part in a workshop and had the opportunity to try on clothing and armour similar to that worn by soldiers at the Battle of Bannockburn, and hold replica weapons.
An educational and enjoyable day was had by all.
