Form III Cricket Team Successful in Citylets Schools’ Competition

The Semi-Final: Dollar Academy v Loretto School Dollar Academy’s Form III cricket team have enjoyed real success in recent days. They won the S1-3 Citylets Schools’ Competition, held at Stirling CC on Tuesday 19 June. In the semi-final, Loretto won the toss and chose to bat first.

‘Their two openers played very well and made 29 and 10 respectively,’ commented Mr Frost (PE teacher and Cricket coach). ‘The boys managed to get their team to a total of 35 for 3 wickets off the first ten overs. The Dollar bowling, so accurate all season, kicked into gear again and stopped any rapid run acceleration. Craig Sharpe bowled 4 overs, 1 for 12; Robbie Disborough 4 overs, 2 for 14; Ben Salmon 2 overs, 0 for 5 runs; Oliver Brown 4 overs, 1 for 18 runs and Josh Pert bowled two overs at the end of the innings for only 12 runs and picked up a good wicket. Loretto finished on 87-8 off their 20 overs. The last four overs only went for 17 runs. Despite the catching not being quite the best, the fielding around the ground was great. Dollar replied, losing early wickets, and were struggling on 27-3 off 6 overs. However, the captain, Jamie Cairns (Form III), ably supported by both Brown and Pert, calmly got his eye in and moved on to score 8 fours in an unbeaten 43 to see the team into the final.’

The Final: Dollar Academy v Hutchesons’ Grammar School

‘Hutchesons’ Grammar chose to bat first in the final and got off to an excellent start,’ said Mr Frost of the final. ‘With one of their openers making 46 valuable runs and the 3rd batsman with 27.’

However, there were only 8 extras over the course of 20 overs and Dollar were set a total of 114 to win – just under 6 per over. The team got off to a great start with Andrew Hynd making 13 and Joe Jennings with 12, despite an injury: 20-1 off 4 overs. The captain and vice-captain came together at the crease in the 8th over and batted sensibly and maturely. Whilst Sharpe scored regularly in the third man area Cairns opened up with his cover drive and their partnership accumulated 62 runs. The Hutcheson captain rotated his five different bowlers well and the fielding was tight, however, once Cairns started to hit boundaries around the ground the total didn’t look quite so large. Cairns ended the match unbeaten on 75, deservedly winning the player of the tournament as well.’

‘The bowling highlights of the finals day was Disborough with three wickets at 11 and an economy of 4 per over; batting was Cairns with 118 unbeaten over two innings and the pick of the fielders were Andrew Jarjour behind the stumps, Will Russell with two excellent catches and Gregor Heyse who has been fantastic since he started playing cricket in late April 2018.’

Many congratulations to all of these fine young players for their success in this tournament.
