Dollar Creates: at Macrobert Centre Arthouse Gallery

‘Dollar Creates is a celebration of the very best of the creative talent from both former and current pupils of Dollar Academy.’ (Gus Maclean, Exhibition Curator and Former Head of Art) A very special exhibition, Dollar Creates, opened on 11 June at the Arthouse Gallery at Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling, and it has received high praise and rave reviews since opening.

The extraordinary exhibition is a part of the celebrations surrounding the launch of Dollar Academy’s Bicentenary Year. It features a huge range of work from Former Pupils and a few current pupils, too, and it includes everything from paintings, drawings and sculpture to photographs, textile and fashion pieces, as well as floral designs and projected digital art. On Tuesday, 19 June, a private viewing took place, attended by 140 guests, including 40 exhibitors and their family and friends. Everyone enjoyed meeting one another and chatting with the Art Department staff as they viewed the exhibition.

The exhibition has been very well received indeed. Exhibitor, Nichol Wheatley (Artist) said, ‘I’ve been involved in a couple of group shows and I know how much is involved. Brilliantly organised, great catalogue and a great opening.’ Commenting on the private viewing evening, Dollar Academy’s Rector, David Knapman, added that ‘It was wonderful to see such an eclectic and imaginative exhibition and to meet so many talented and hardworking exhibitors.’

Preview night at Dollar Creates

The exhibition brings together a very wide-ranging community of over 60 artists, all of whom have one thing in common: each of them began learning their craft at Dollar Academy. With its national reputation for excellence in art and design, it is no surprise that many of its pupils (and its teachers) have gone on to carve out astonishingly successful careers. The creative industries have undergone a blossoming in recent years. This is in no small part due to schools like Dollar whose passionate Art and Design teachers have helped to produce so many of our age’s fine young artists, architects, designers, florists, graphic artists, sculptors, photographers and more. Gus Maclean, the Exhibition Curator and Former Head of Art at Dollar Academy, said, ‘What an enjoyable night in which I got to renew my acquaintance with so many former pupils who studied Art and Design and then went on to have careers in the creative industries. The exhibition is a wonderfully diverse range of approaches to developing visual ideas.’
