The strong performances at Glasgow Green, and throughout the season, resulted in both Bands winning the Champion of Champions accolade in their respective grades for the season.
The season began on 18 May with the British Championships in Paisley. Despite the weather, both Bands did exceptionally well: first place for Juvenile and third place for Novice Juvenile A.
The UK Championships was next, taking place in Lurgan, on 15 June. Both Bands placed first in their respective categories. Pupils were not only congratulated on their excellent piping and drumming, but also on their behaviour – they were a credit to the school throughout the trip.
On 29 June, our Bands travelled to Inverness for the European Championships. Successful once again, the Juvenile Band finished in first place, with the Novice Juvenile A Band placing third.
In the penultimate competition on 27 July, our Bands competed in the Scottish Championships in Dumbarton. Both Bands placed first in their respective categories and moved to the final stage of the season.
The RSPBA World Championships was held at Glasgow Green on 17-18 August. 8000 pipers and drummers gathered over the two days to compete in the most prestigious piping competition of the year. The Bands were placed in nine different competition grades, based on ability and results.
Once again, our Juvenile Pipe Band performed exceptionally well and returned to Dollar as World Champions. Our Novice Juvenile A Band also competed and placed fourth with both Bands winning the Champion of Champions title for the season – a fantastic result for the school.
Dollar Academy’s Pipe Bands have a consistent record of performing to a very high standard at the World Championships – a strong record but one which places a degree of pressure on staff and pupils each year. It is important to acknowledge the hard work that goes into rehearsing for such a prestigious competition. Parents should also be recognised for their dedication and support during this busy season.
Matt Wilson, Pipe Band Major of the Juvenile Band said: “This was a fantastic season for both Bands, which saw our Juvenile Band lift its 6th world title and 3rd “Grand Slam”. To do this with a very young group highlights the major effort put in by all of our pupils. I continue to be so proud of what we achieve collectively, whether we win or not.”
