In a change to previous formats, all pupils in Junior 1 and 2 participated in the 2019 Burns competition, either by reciting a Burns poem or signing a Burns song to their classmates. Two winners from each class were then selected to perform in the Junior Burns Competition, held in the Auditorium on Thursday 24 January.
Our sixteen finalists wowed the judges with their rendition of Burns’ most famous works. As ever, the calibre was extremely high. Mr Graham Pearson and Mr David Nelson from the Dollar Burns Club were joined by Mr Neil McFadyean, Head of History and Modern Studies and Mrs Kate Murray, Head of English, to select six winners.
After some deliberation, the winners were announced: Ollie Pillans, Zuzu Johnston, Freya Robins, Esther Lang, Daniel Schellenberg and Cara Croman.
The Burns Day celebrations continued into the next day for the Junior School. On Friday 25 January, the pupils gathered together in the school Dining Hall for the first ever Junior Burns Supper.
Thank you to Mr O’Donnell and his magnificent catering team, who served a delicious meal of haggis, neeps and tatties, followed by a serving of trifle. The food was accompanied by a little of our ‘other’ national drink, Irn-bru.
Mr Lumsden, Head of Chemistry and member of the Dollar Burns Club, gave an enthralling Address to the Haggis.
Our six winners performed once more before the judges, who were also joined by the Rector and Mr Lumsden. The overall winner was Zuzu Johnston, whose passionate and heartfelt singing of Ae Fond Kiss captivated and enthralled the judges.
